Morro de São Paulo

Morro de São Paulo is a small, picturesque island located off the coast of Salvador, in the state of Bahia, Brazil. Part of the Tinharé Archipelago, it’s known for its stunning white-sand beaches, clear turquoise waters, and lively yet laid-back atmosphere. The island is car-free, adding to its charm—visitors get around on foot, by wheelbarrow taxis, or by boat. Morro de São Paulo offers a mix of relaxation and nightlife, with quiet beaches like Praia do Encanto and vibrant spots such as Segunda Praia, where bars and restaurants line the shore. It’s a popular destination for both Brazilian and international travelers seeking a tropical escape with a touch of Bahian culture.

Why?

This project is about more than music – it’s about giving local kids opportunities, confidence, and a brighter future.
The build cost will be almost entirely privately funded by Marcos & Anne Santana, and Jan Henderson.
Marcos lived on Morro for 6 years and set up a Samba Reggae percussion project called Tribo, before relocating to the UK and setting up another Tribo band there. He trained from an early age with blocos in Salvador including Timbalada. Anne is an events manager currently working for Cisco. Jan is British, a project manager by profession, and has been learning percussion from Marcos for 7 years and is co-director of Tribo. Having experienced the joys of samba reggae and understood the important history of its creation, they want to help ensure the locals also enjoy its many benefits

Our Aspirations for the Future

To create a sustainable community center for the locals of Morro de São Paulo to learn samba reggae percussion & dance and maths, english and IT skills.
